I'm not even sure what year this was. Linda was
working out of town putting on one of her many conferences for the
Caltrans Traffic Department. I was looking forward to her
coming home with great anticipation - I was tired of being a bachelor
again.
Friday, when I got home from work, I made a huge
"Welcome Home" banner with my Commodore 64 - it was 11 inches high
and about 6 feet long - and pasted it on the garage door. Linda
was supposed to be home before dark and I wanted the sign to be
the first thing she saw when she drove up to the house.
Unknown to me, Kevin was on leave and also on
his way home. He didn't tell us he was coming home - he was
going to surprise us.
Kevin walked up to the door and stuck his key
in the lock. Since I was waiting for Linda, I assumed it was
her at the door and I opened the door. There stood Kevin smiling
from ear to ear. He said, "How did you know I was coming home?"
Without thinking, I said "The sign is for Linda - she's been
out of town all week and is due home any minute". His smile
vanished, and he said "Oh" as he pushed past me into the house.
I sure wish I had lied and said the sign was for him.
