Kevin was a substitute on one of my bowling teams one
evening. Each game the entire league had what we called the high
game pot. Each person contributed $1 and the highest game collected
the entire pot. It wasn’t a great deal of money but there was a certain
amount of prestige associated with winning a high pot – if you did, you
were one of the big boys.
Kevin bowled very well the first two games but not quite
enough to collect any money. The last game he started off with a
string of strikes and seemed sure to be the winner. However I was
close behind him and near the end he missed one of his strikes and I passed
them. In the last frame he struck out forcing made to do the same
if I were to win. He was almost positive that I would slack off and
let him have the pot. I didn’t believe in that, however, and I did
my best. Unfortunately for Kevin I did strikeout and robbed him of
his only chance to win the money. I remember his disbelief and disappointment.
I always hope he came to understand that if I'd let him win the pot it
wouldn't have meant anything to him.
He went on in the next couple of years to win his share
of high game pots honestly.
