Some Information About Doug & Linda Printz
My name is Doug Printz and my wife's name is Linda. We live
in western El Dorado County, California in the foothills east of Sacramento.
I was born and raised in a small town in southwestern Montana.
My dad, three brothers and a sister still live there. When I was in my early
20's I moved to California to work for the California Division of Highways,
now known as Caltrans. I worked for Caltrans as a civil engineer for 35 years
and retired in July, 2000. I spent a great deal of my career working with computers
and their use in highway engineering design.
Linda was born in Utah and moved to the Sacramento, California
area when she was 10 years old. Her parents also live in the area. Linda's brother,
Wayne also lived in the area until his tragic death in July, 2002. She began
her career with the Department of Parks and Recreation and soon transferred
to Caltrans. She began as a secretary and eventually became a Caltrans Administrator.
She spent many years in the Traffic Department in a variety of functions. She
was a meeting planner, training specialist, human resource specialist, and contract
administrator. She retired in February 2000 after 29 years.
Our marriage is the second for both of us - we were married
in 1983. I have a son, Kevin, from my first marriage. He was a Navy veteran
and a firefighter with the Sacramento Fire Protection District. He was also
an excellent welder and metal fabricator. He died tragically in 1998 at the
age of 34 years. Kevin had two sons, Kyle and Forrest. His youngest, Forrest
also died tragically of a hereditary disease just four months after Kevin died.
It was a rough year! Kyle and his mother lived in the area until October of
2003 when they moved to Eastern Washington. We miss having Kyle over every weekend,
but we keep in close contact and hope to visit each other often.
My interests include:
- Karate - I currently train at Orr's Martial
Arts in Diamond Springs
- Bicycling - I own a Trek mountain bike and
spend a lot of time riding the rural roads of western El Dorado County.
- Working Out - In my old age it seems I'm always
packing a little more weight than I'd like. Linda is a great cook and her
food is hard to resist. It seems like I'm constantly on a treadmill, lifting
weights, in a kickboxing class, or some other equally unpleasant activity.
- Motorcycles - I currently have a BMW R1200GS,
a dual-purpose motorcycle. I'm spending many enjoyable hours exploring the
highways and byways of Northern California. Just prior to this bike, I owned
a 2005 KLR 650 a smaller dual purpose motorcycle that provided me with several
adventures. Up until November 2004, we owned a Honda Goldwing and every year
we took a trip somewhere. Linda and I have been to Canada several times and
traveled to Montana many, many times to visit my family. In the summer of
2003, Linda and I rode the Goldwing across the United States to Myrtle Beach,
SC, then North thru Michigan, then West to the Oregon coast and back to California
- a distance of 8400 miles. Click
here for our route. Until Kyle moved to Washington, he rode a lot with
me and has also made the trip to Montana. Kevin was also an avid motorcyclist
and accompanied us many times on his own motorcycle when he was alive. He
was also a gifted motocross rider which he passed on to Kyle. Kyle has
his own motorcycle and spends a lot of time perfecting his skills. Kevin
left his KZ1000 in pieces when he died and we got it back on the road in the
Spring of 2002 (see
photos) thanks to a lot of help from Mike's Cycle in Placerville and especially
to John Proto of Performance Motorcycle in Diamond Springs.
- Computers - I've owned
some kind of computer since 1982 when I spent a fortune on a Commodore 64.
I used to like programming, but since the WWW has come to be, I spend most
of my time surfing the web, swapping e-mail, and making web pages. It's a
lot of fun.
- Traveling - I enjoy driving around the west
either by car or motorcycle. I don't enjoy flying much, but Linda has talked
me into taking about one trip a year to Hawaii - I sure enjoy it over there.
Linda's interests include:
- Bicycling - She owns a trek hybrid bicycle
and rides with me on shorter trips. I'm currently training her up for some
of the longer rides.
- Motorcycles - Linda hasn't been doing much
motorcycling since our "Sea to Shining Sea" trip in 2003. Now that
we have the BMW, I hoping to interest her in some more motorcycle travel.
She used to ride a Honda XR100 dirt bike and a Yamaha Virago cruiser motorcycle.
She also has logged about 150,000 miles as my pillion partner on my various
touring machines.
- Traveling - In addition to traveling with
me by motorcycle and car, Linda enjoys traveling the world. In November 2005
she went on a two-week Mediterranean cruise with Donna and Marty. She's also
made two trips to Europe in 2000 and 1997 and has plans for more trips. She
also loves Hawaii and has been there many, many times.
- Cooking and Working Out -
She has lots of cookbooks and several Internet sites bookmarked. She likes
to cook and bake food of all kinds - I rarely find the same thing on my plate
twice. Hence, we spend a lot of time at the gym trying to work off all that
food. In 2002, Linda trained for and completed the half marathon in Kona as
member of the Train to End Stroke Team.
- Computers - She cruises the Internet looking
for travel deals and she likes to make her own greeting cards.
